The Park of Senj Writers
The city of Senj, where some of the most famous Croatian writers and poets of their time were born and lived (Silvije Strahimir Kranjčević, Milutin Cihlar Nehajev, Vjenceslav Novak, Milan Ogrizović, Pavao Ritter Vitezović), has dedicated a park above the old city beach to them, where their busts have been placed.
The park also contains the votive church of Saint Mary of Arta.
One of the most famous writers from Senj is Miljenko Smoje, whose stories and humor about the lives of people from the Adriatic have become an indispensable part of Croatian culture. His colorful tales about ordinary people, along with the distinctive Senj dialect, vividly capture the authentic atmosphere of Senj and its surroundings.
Senj was also home to many poets who celebrated through their verses the beauty of this region — the sea, nature, history, as well as the struggles of the local people through the centuries.
The Park of Senj Writers is a symbol of gratitude to these word artists who, through their works, have preserved and passed on the Senj identity to future generations. Walking through the park, visitors can feel the spirit of Senj through the words and verses that have woven the story of this special coastal town.
