National Park Northern Velebit
National Park Northern Velebit, the youngest Croatian national park, was established in 1999. Its purpose was to encompass the most attractive and naturally valuable areas of the northern part of the Velebit mountain. In this rugged mountain landscape, a remarkable number of natural attractions are concentrated in a relatively small area – the magnificent karst formations of Hajdučki and Rožanski kukovi, a unique botanical garden in the open air, and Lukina jama, one of the deepest caves in the world. For this reason, Croatian mountaineers consider this area the greatest treasure among the country’s mountains. The slightly lower number of visitors, due to its remoteness from main roads, only enhances the mystique and pristine natural atmosphere of this region.
